The Art Gallery was established in 1959 as an art department at the Historical Museum in the city. In 1981 it became an independent institution. It is located in a separate, specially built building. It has a 3,000 m2 exhibition area. The Art Gallery also has two exhibition halls in the museum-houses "Nikola Marinov" and "Stefan Kucarov".
The fund of the Art Gallery "Nikola Marinov" consists of 3240 pieces of paintings, graphics and sculptures, with about 1000 pieces of the paintings being watercolors. It is the only specialized gallery in the country to collect, store and display watercolors. It includes works of painting, graphics, sculpture and applied art. The gallery features 1851 paintings, 786 graphic artworks, 199 sculpture, 10 applied art works.
The greatest interest is the work of the famous aquarelle master Prof. Nikola Marinov, from whom the gallery holds 79 works.
The expositions include the famous masters of painting: Dechko Uzunov, Svetlin Rusev, Zlatyu Boyadjiev and many other contemporary Bulgarian artists.
