The Sofia History Museum was established in 1928 as a part of a Municipal cultural institution, including a museum, a library, an archive and a gallery. In 1952 the museum is separated, but has no permanent exposition for decades. On September 17, 2015, the permanent exhibition of the Museum was officially opened in the former Central Mineral Bath building. By a government decree in November 2015, the Sofia History Museum was transformed from a municipal into a regional one. The Municipal Council of Sofia Municipality approved the Rules of the new cultural institution on 14 January 2016.
The cultural values, which are stored in the funds of the Sofia History Museum, are over 120 000, including a scientific library and a photo archive, with 34 611 values stored in the basic fund and 27 647 items in the research fund. The museum employs 70 specialists. The museum has three branches – The “Sveta Sofia” basilica, the Exposition for National Reconciliation and the Tomb of Prince Alexander I. The museum hosts exhibitions, lectures and other cultural events. It issues the Scientific Series "Serdika, Sredets, Sofia"
