The museum is the successor of the archaeological collection created by the brothers Karel and Hermengild Shkorpil at the Rousse Boy’s High School "Kniaz Boris I". It was founded in 1904. Since 2000, it has the status of a regional museum with scope of activity Rousse Province. Since 2007, the permanent exhibition of the museum is housed in the building of the District Administration, a representative administrative building built in 1882 - 1892. Its fund includes over 140000 museum units. It maintains nine sites, including The Pantheon of National Revival Heroes, the archaeological reserve of Sexaginta Prista and the Ecomuseum with aquarium. It develops scientific and promotional activity. It conducts field archeological and ethnological research. It is organizer of the established forum "Museum Exhibitions Fair". Part of the structure of the Rousse Museum is the Ivanovo Rock – Hewn Churches.
