The National Gallery is the largest state  cultural institution , related  to the protection and promotion of the artistic heritage of Bulgaria. It is created by a Council of Ministers Decree № 440 / 22.12.2014, published in the Official Journal № 107 / 24.12.2014. On the 26 of June, 2015, the National Gallery adopted its present name on a basis of a government decision. In the public it is still widely known as the National Art Gallery. 

The National Gallery is a representative institution of art. It takes care of more than 42,000 artworks in two main directions: Bulgarian art and foreign art and maintains a network of sites in the capital. It implements various exhibition, research, fund and promotional activities.
