The Municipal Institute "Ancient Plovdiv" was established in 2004 as a cultural organization within the meaning of the Law on Protection and Development of Culture. The subject of its activity is preservation and promotion of the movable and immovable cultural values in the architectural and historical reserve "Ancient Plovdiv". The Institute is not a museum structure in the narrow sense of the word, but it maintains and exhibits collections of movable cultural values. In addition to museum activities, the Institute is also involved in conservation and restoration activities in the Old Town infrastructure and in the sites that enter into its direct administration. It organizes cultural events. It maintains long-lasting initiatives related to the promotion and exhibition of the heritage of Plovdiv. There are ten sites in the Institute's direct department, some of which maintain permanent and temporary museum exhibitions.
